Douglas A-1 Sky Raider Folding Wings
« on: 09/06/2014, 09:40:42 AM »
All,

Reg has charged me with coming up with a design to make the wings (wing tips) on his Douglas A-1 Sky Raider fold as per the carrier based variant.

Douglas appear to have had two main designs to do this:

First, a simple hinge based around cutting the wing spars and making a hinge around them.

Second, later, a more complex design based on levers and idlers.

I will be trying out the first simple mechanism and using an Arduino to sequence the movements.

Each wing will probably need two servos. One for the wing tip movement and one to engage a locking pin / catch. I may be able to get away with one servo to do both locks.

The first stage is to build a mock up of the mechanism, so here are some photos:

Now with added servos!

Remember this is only demonstration / mockup so only a small build with little 9g servos.

I haven't quite got the wing tips to get to 109° from horizontal like the real aircraft.

Other things to sort out include:
  • Getting the pivot point for the hinge closer to the top outside corner of the main wing so that the hinge turn is "tighter".
  • Make longer servo arms to get more rotation at the wing tip.
  • Investigate different / better locking methods.
